About three months ago we hired two new Account Executives – Ian and Misty. Both of them are doing a great job, and though they took different paths to get here, they both had the same reasons for coming.
Ian graduated from Fredonia with a Communications degree. He then worked two summers in Alaska on a fishing boat. The way he described the atmosphere was very neighborly, every boat looked out for the next. He loved the fact that it was a tight-knit community.
Soon after, Ian started working for a company that sold fish. He loved the one on one communication, and the fact that he had so much expertise in the field. However after about three years, he felt like something was missing. Though he was working inhe was always selling outside his community, and felt disconnected.
Ian started looking for a job where he could really connect with the people around him, and that’s where United Way came in.
Misty came to us from Arkansas, where she received her Communications degree from Arkansas State University. While working for a corporation she got transferred to Upstate New York. She had the same kind of feelings Ian did, where even though she was living in Buffalo she was working with clients outside the area. Misty joined the nonprofit world shortly after that, and even though she had been in the corporate world for nine years she quickly adjusted. Though she was doing great work she still wanted something else – she wanted to see the changes she was making every single day. She wanted to better the community she lived in, and that’s how she came to United Way.
Everyone here has a different story, and a different path they took to get here, but we all have one thing in common. We wanted to see a change in our community, and we wanted to be the ones to make it. We would love for you to join us, in whatever way you can. What do you do to feel closer to your community?
